Rich,

Provisional marks are often seen on the back frame, and are also found on the grip strap. These provisional marks are more commonly seen on Reichswehr double dated reissues. It seems to have been done early post war before the Reichswehr was downsized in 1921 to 21 from 110+ Infantry Regiments. George Anderson has an LP.08 with a provisional mark to the Reichswehr 46th Regiment which would only have been done prior to the downsizing.

I have seen a very few with the provisional mark over struck, with a full unit mark applied to the grip strap. Often they are found with just the provisional mark, as if it was deemed good enough.

Rear Frame Numbering

It was common for police units to mark the rear frame with a rack number. The lack of a sear safety on your pistol is interesting (most police pistols had it). Not sure how common it was for the military to mark on the rear frame. Here's the mark on my 1920 DWM.

Not sure what would be a "goodly" number, but I have a couple in my collection....

Here are some examples of Provisional Unit marks.

Photo #4 shows the Provisional mark on the toe of the grip strap with full unit mark stamped on the face.

Photo #6 shows a provisional unit mark in the frame ear.

Photo #7 shows an over struck provisional mark with full unit mark applied.

Photo #10 is on a C96 Mauser with 1920 property mark.
