If I remember correctly, Charles Dickens ponderd this question in the opening passages of A Christmas Carol, citing Marley as being dead as a door nail and wondering why a door nail should be deader than a coffin nail.

Perhaps the use of doornails is so dead, and has bee so dead for so long, that it's lack of use has become part of our culture?
Still, coffin nails, no matter how you look at them, will be pretty damned dead... :D |
True confessions
When I was a pup, I finally earned the right to carry the "farm" .22 on our Punxsatawney spread. Groudhogs were the order of the day, but none were running, so down to the pond i went.
Big frogs floated, their heads just peeping above the water line, what makes a fine target. Got 'em all...grave---yard dead! One proud marksman I was. The next a-yem, off to the pond I went. Now floating upon the water's surface was a billion or trillion o' these graveyard dead floppers. What does a boy do? Can't swim out to clean them up cause there's monsters and snakes awaitin' just the kind of boy what would shoot an innocent little frog! Never have lived that sight down. Ive wandered in many a target rich arenas in which to shoot , but to this day have not shot down another animal. Now the birds attacking my poor defenseless little cat.....diffferent story; and a more sporting pellet gun and I am beginning to live down those frog demons. Jack Hiles Mesa AZ |
