Getting back to your original request for folks to post up more photos of rods...

Here is a LP-08 cleaning rod I own.

I think it is authentic based on :

1. Shape and contour of the woodend "beer barrel". Some of the repros do not get this right.

2. Dense nature of the wood of the "beer barrel".

3. Wood swivels on the rod. I had to clean mine before I could free up the swivel aspect.

4. Brass tipped.

5. Small Imperial/Crown stamping on one end of the wooden "beer barrel". With a naked eye, the stamping looked just like nicks & dents in the wood. A 10x loupe shows the inspection stamping clearly. It is a very old stamping in the wood...not freshly stamped/cut.

6. The metal of the swivel components that run through the wood on my rod are made of steel. I think some of the early rods had these components made of brass.


BTW...I picked up this rod with an C/Imperial stamped TD tool in a ratty old holster on eBay. The holster was a throw-away and I sent it to Jerry's shop for parts recycling. I paid for the auction what I thought the rod and TD tool was worth...no more. I won the auction.

I have a 1918-dated LP-08 holster to go along with my 1918-dated Arty luger. Still working on the stock and leather trimmings.

Only thing better would be for my luger to have Swiss proofs...:D

Thanks for the picture. Just what I am looking for. Would it possible to get a picture of the handle where the rod connects to it. I would like to see how it was connected to the barrel.

A while back I drew up the cleaning rod in AutoCAD and did a rendering of it using the plans that I got from John S. I think I still have this somewhere and will post it when I get a chance.

To answer you last question:

The last mass produced Luger holsters that was equip to carry a cleaning rod were dated 1934. Even before that date most holsters did not have the strap attached to the tool pouch to hold the cleaning rod.

The brass cleaning rod that you often see on eBay with the built in oiler, was made for Luger orders shipped to the Portuguese military by DWM. They are not German military or police style rods.

This is a rod from the 'dunno' category. The top swivels, the rod itself is all metal, the barrel looks old, but has a smaller profile with only 2 bands each.

Either repro or locally made replacement

Attached are 2 cleaning rods that came with 2 seperate M1943 Portuguese Luger Holsters. The aluminum one is incorrect and probably not even a Luger rod. The other I do not believe is Portueuese either, but it does look original for something, but what? Any ideas. David

Here are some close-up photos you asked for.

Looking more closely at my rod, the swivel hardware is brass and not steel as I first reported.

I did not want to clean it too much and loose its aged-history. If I took Brasso cleaner to it, I am sure the brass would be very bright.

Great photos Pete! You went above and beyond the call. I do appreciate it very much. It looks great just as it is. I would not clean it although it is tempting to do so.

Gerben, thanks for the photo. The one that I have is similar to yours and is all steel. I have no ideas either who made this. I am sure that it is a reproduction.

David, I have an aluminum cleaning rod similar to the top one pictured that was in a cleaning kit that I got from my father. Would you be able to do a favor for me? I would like to see a few detailed pictures of the one at the bottom. This is the first time that I have seen one like it. I wonder how common or rare those are. Anyone out there have any idea? Does anyone have anything similar? Can you post photos if you do?
