wlyon has it right IMO ... especially the 'Do not see how hard you can rub' part.
The objective is to gently remove all surface rust not the finish. If you can get 0000 bronze wool that is preferable but not a game ender. Bronze wool is non magnetic and easier to clean up ... micro magnetized steel wool particles hide in every crevice after any steel wool use
