Well, the sad truth is that (because of safety and reliability issues) I would not carry a Luger Parabellum pistol or use it around the house for protection.
The design of pistols is a moving target, and with improvements things have changed over time.. None of this stops my fascination and preference for collecting them... If it's any consolation, you'll find many of the parts of the M1929 Swiss Lugers were made by Sig...
