Many times I think it is lack of knowledge. I read on facebook or another forum where someone quotes an old book or a poorly written book on 'well-known' facts that are outdated theories.

Such as the interior numbers on a sideplate, I have heard folks say it was on all lugers. Until recently I did not know that DWM marked theirs.

The 1920 marking - some guy said that it was to show arsenal rebuild and that they were okay for sale commercially-had never heard that one before.

Could be, if so, they got the location correct
and the numbers wrong.

Or maybe just a Mauser plate with the correct two outside numbers.

As an afterthought. Regarding my Mauser sideplates:

If the S/42 has the 2 first digits in the inside middle, the BYF is somewhat different. The first digit (an 8) is at the middle but the second digit is a lazy 0 to one side of the plate (left side with the inside of the plate facing you).

1917/1920 DWM #5850i (formerly an Artillery) 50 on sideplate face 58 on the bottom, inside

1917 DWM Artillery #9936i 36 on side plate face 99 on the bottom, inside

Thanks Wayne, pictures are fine; numbers are just hard to see as they are not really deeply struck.
But they are there for sure.
