The very early guns were marked in that manner. I don't recall when they stopped marking them that way...for the Swiss I think it was around serial #1000 or close to it. The marking on the magazine release was the first to go. The US Test trials guns still had the serial number on the right round of the take down lever until after #7100, then it shifted to the left side flat. The digits on the RIA piece were not added, it was made that way.
