In the mid 1940s, my allowance was 10 cents every Saturday, with which I would walk alone (beginning at age 5) to the drug store at the end of the block and buy a comic. The neighbor hood kids would then play poker for comics. I compiled a stack 3 feet high by the time I was 9, which was left behind when we moved to the suburbs in 1949.
