I have a friend who picked up a lengh of concrete pipe. I'm guessing it is 24' inner diameter and maybe six feet long. He has it up on saw horses in front of the shooting position on his home property range. The shooting bench is just behind it and he fires through the pipe, which does a really nice job of deadening the firearm's report.

It would also redirect the sound fore & aft rather than let it spread...

Back in the 80's, I decided to try skydiving...Static line, Para-Commander, 4000 feet...Terrifying, but the biggest surprise was the total silence as you drift down...Nothing for the sounds to bounce off of...Nothing...I could see the Cessna circling, the guys on the ground, another skydiver drifting down...I tried shouting, even my own voice was muted...Quite an acoustical experience...

test firing a .22lr is just a whisper or pfffft, ..38 spl and 9mm a bit more , 762x 39 the loudest but greatly reduced , since it will be used for live firing and heavy calibers ,it is built to heavier thickness than normaly would be required ,

since it will be used for live firing and heavier calibers beyond the 9mm m9 and .223 m16 it is somewhat over built. better to be safe than sorry.
