Not to thread hijack, but was 2 the bring back limit? I seem to remember hearing that from a old vet i worked with. I think he said when the ship pulled into New York they were told they would get in trouble for any undocumented souveniers, and lots of firearms went into the drink dockside.

Minipipper, my dad an WWII Vet told me the same thing as you described. Sad! Seems like he later told me it was a bluff.
