That's a good one.

R. Lee Ermey was never really a Gunnery Sergeant. He was a Staff Sergeant. In 2002 he was given a honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.

...by the [then] Commandant no less!!!

I never really understood why Kubrick made him a gunny in Full Metal Jacket...when I was in, the highest DI rank was Staff Sgt...your series had a Series Gunnery Sgt, but he was all admin, not hands-on training...We only saw the Series Gunny when he was whipping through the barracks ["the barn"] with some paperwork problem...and the only time we saw an officer (before Final Inspection) was when we got our UCMJ lecture...

My senior DI was a Gunny, and he was definitely a hands-on DI, and I mean that literally. Of course, I was in boot camp in 1956, so things may not have been the same in more recent years.
