You should still be able to do barrel tapers by simply offsetting your tailstock on the lathe by half the difference between the large end and small end of the taper! May I recommend two websites that you may find of great interest? http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/index.php and http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/index.php There are some really great tips and machining discussions on these two websites...
