They can be used for holding rounds as well, as in most early 20th. century bolt action rifles were fed from "stripper clips". I agree that it is incorrect when referring to a firearm feeding devise which incorporates its own spring and follower, which would correctly be called a magazine.
Gentlemen:

A magazine either stores powder or is something you read.

When referring to this device for a Luger, the proper DWM terminology, in the English language, is "Cartridge Holder".
