DWM modifications to the frame in 1915?

Halfway down page 149 of John Walter's The Luger Story he says DWM "made minor changes to the rear part of the frame and the return-spring housing in 1915..." And he also says all Erfurt frames have this modification.

Has anyone seen these changes or pictures of them? Just curious what they were as there's an outside chance this could help me date a 1915-18 DWM frame (SN: 4547i) on my mixed parts shooter.

I believe this is discussed as the Mauser hump or bump, see the FAQ for a discussion on it...

Ed, I think Quentin is referring to the so-called "reinforced" frame that was written up so well in one of Kenyon's Gun Report articles a few years ago.

Thanks Herb, I do not remember ever hearing of this

Quentin,

See these two threads for exhaustive discussion of the topic.

Thanks, Dwight! Both of your threads are excellent and explain the modifications clearly. Very kind of you to give me the links.

Surprising that Walter didn't clear this up in The Luger Story as it certainly was in error in his earlier books.

Edward Tinker 05-26-2007 04:39 PM

I don't think this was cleared up until Dwight brought it to life and light...

Well he did a great job, Ed, and his illustrations really helped me understand what the mods were. Top notch work as usual, Dwight!

These forums are a gold mine of information.

All y'all are too kind...
