The barrel numbers being stamped on the inside of a curved surface may play a part in the appearance. The stamps themselves being flat.

True, but the inside of the number 8 is not round and the inside of the numbers look choppy. Like an engraving chisel or pen?

Compare to one of my 1900 AE's.
