Using a small punch, and a light hammer, tap just the hold open forward until it snaps/lowers
back into its cut out. That should release the jam, but as Vilm said, the small hold open spring may be broken and also jamming the receiver. If it still won't move- report back.

Much appreciated. Yes mine is hopelessly out of place and very tightly jammed. I am hesitant to tap it, but maybe I have no choice. the hold back and upper are seized, with no movement possible

Also, the release lever has always been very tough to rotate to remove the side plate. Can this have anything to do with the release of the upper?
