One possible downside to contacting the G. I. could be that if somewhere along the line the gun was reported to be stolen, in which case the current "owner" would lose it and be out their money too.

I know, one I bought did come back stolen after an NCIC check. Took months to clear up that transaction; long story as the luger was "only" a frame by the time I got it. I've written this story on one of these luger sites.
