Crud is not good.
There have been extensive and frequent threads on this type of problem; problems have a number of causes and even more solutions/fixes. The ejector causes the empty cartridge to be "ejected", in the case of the luger upward. A faulty broken or chipped ejector could be the problem.

Cleaned out the crud, will try it again and if no success will try the extractor (& spring) and the ejector.
