Default Re: Leather Care+use vs Preservation

Most of the elixirs that are oil-based make a holster look shiny (for a short time) but, as you correctly note, have deleterious effects on the leather itself. I received a letter from the curator of the Museum of the Confederacy this week and he stated it well when he referred to leather as THE most difficult material to conserve. Fortunately, the best known methods for preserving leather AND making it look its best are both inexpensive and easy for anyone to do. Research in museums and university laboratories is arriving at some good information about what is best. One of the best summaries of the theory of leather conservation up to 1990 or so is the Library of the Netherlands web site. A google search should take you there.
