First of all congratulations indeed, I think that now you really have a real piece of art in your safe, and I'm a bit envious I confess.

About the shooting isssue, I've often been dragged into this old question: "to shoot or not to shoot the damn thing", and generally I recommend "NOT to shoot old and scarce guns in their original pristine condition", BUT in this case I would at least test it with all the possible care and respect for the work done to it.
After all if it hasn't been shot, than I argue that it is not a gun. Some people would say that a ship isn't a ship until it floats, until then, it is just a funny shaped piece of construction.

Functional art after all should work, and nothing is proven to work until it does what it is expected to do.
A Ferrari or a Bugatti are surely works of art suitable for display in a modern art museum, but I argue that Mr Enzo Ferrari did not intend for that and no doubt he built his cars to be driven.
A Stradivarius is only really appreciated when it is played.
