Because they are carrying 03 Springfields. The Army had fully transitioned to the Garand by then, (with a few homefront exceptions and the occasional sniper).

Army troops in the Pacific soon learned NEVER to set their Garand down within 100 feet of a Marine in the field or it would certainly disappear!!

BINGO!!!!!!!

but I also was told and have read, the Marines didn't like the M-1 when it was first introduced and continue with 03 contracts, many reasons were given but the one I read over and over again was, the M1 wasted too much ammo and Marine marksmanship would suffer, which is understandable in a way but I loved all semi-autos/autos when they were in my hands.
