RIA 1902 Cartridge Counter w stamped holster

That stock appears to me to be instead a holster stock. As it appears to have a hinged top and the thickness to house the pistol. I wonder where that concept came from? It looks a whole lot like the not so refined wooden holster that I picked up earlier in the year.
