Audio technicians have probably been at that sort of thing since at least the first days of radio. Now that I think about it, backstage guys made thunder by flexing sheet metal offstage. Notably, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" had a very low budget and had to clack coconut shells together because they couldn't afford actual horses.
