I have always given my SSN. My last name is somewhat unusual. I can only imagine the horrors with a last name like Smith or Jones.
Here in Idaho if one has a concealed weapons license the store bypasses the NICS check. The license info is recorded and the buyer leaves with the gun. No background check is done. The CWL is the background check.
